Founded in 2024, the Auroville Global Fellowship is an independent network of more than 50 distinguished individuals who share a deep connection with Auroville and have made significant contributions to the world in fields aligned with Auroville’s evolutionary ideals.
Our Fellows span diverse disciplines—from environmental sustainability and education to cultural integration and spiritual development—united by their commitment to the principles of human unity, unending education, and conscious evolution as embodied in Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy, the Mother’s teachings, and the Auroville Charter.
The Fellowship serves as an inspirational and advisory body, offering a forum for international supporters to remain informed about Auroville’s development, contribute insights, and provide guidance that helps advance Auroville’s mission.
The Auroville Global Fellowship envisions a thriving Auroville that implements its founding purpose as a universal township dedicated to human unity and the evolution of consciousness. We are committed to Auroville as a living laboratory where Sri Aurobindo's integral spirituality manifests in sustainable practices, innovative governance, and harmonious community development.
The Fellowship seeks to amplify Auroville's significance as a beacon of hope for humanity—a place where material and spiritual research converge to create new possibilities for human coexistence that transcend traditional boundaries of nationality, politics, and creed. Through our collective wisdom and diverse global perspectives, we aim to help Auroville preserve and nurture its essential character as a pioneering experiment in conscious evolution.
The Fellowship functions as an independent advisory body, offering insight, guidance, and support for Auroville's development in alignment with its Charter and founding principles. Through thoughtful forum discussions, information exchange, and collaborative projects, we provide perspectives that blend intimate knowledge of Auroville with broader global expertise.
As experienced professionals who have contributed significantly to fields relevant to Auroville's evolutionary ideals, we offer words of wisdom for inevitable blind spots, encourage continued striving toward Auroville's ideals, and serve as a bridge between Auroville and the wider world. We operate independently, focusing on how Auroville might best fulfill its mission as a transformative force for human unity in our complex and rapidly changing world.
We uphold the principles of human unity central to Auroville and the spiritual philosophy of Sri Aurobindo. The Fellowship values open dialogue, diverse perspectives, and respectful engagement across a wide range of cultural, professional, and conceptual differences. We are committed to truth, transparency, and constructive action that supports Auroville's growth as a laboratory for a new consciousness and way of living. We value integrity in our communications, recognizing that confidentiality creates safe spaces for authentic exchange while transparency builds trust.
Our approach balances critical thinking with compassion, acknowledging both Auroville's remarkable achievements and the areas requiring growth and evolution. We embrace the principles of fidelity, respect, and mutuality that have guided Auroville's development, viewing ourselves as supporters rather than directors of its unfolding journey toward manifesting an actual human unity.
The Idea Emerges
A few Aurovilians meet and discuss this idea, inspired by the Findhorn Fellowship. A team of coordinators is created and lists potential Fellows.
Public Release
The Auroville Global Fellowship is established and its first members join. The Auroville community is informed at the occasion of Mother's birthday.
Subgroup Creation
Through their email discussions, Fellows create a subgroup that will compile a report on Auroville's crisis, and make recommendations for the future.
Report Published
The Fellowship's first report, Auroville in Crisis & the Way Forward, is released and sent to a number of Indian officials, associates of Auroville, etc.
Launch of Website
The Fellowship's website is completed, and published online. For the first time, shared vision, purpose and values are articulated for the Fellowship.
The first issue of the Auroville Witness newsletter is released, giving voice to stories about what it is to live in Auroville right now, at this moment.

In total, there are over 55 Fellows from various nationalities, professions and fields of expertise.
The Auroville Global Fellowship, founded in 2024, is an independent network of more than 50 national and international supporters who have made significant contributions in diverse fields relevant to Auroville's evolutionary ideals. These Global Fellows play an inspirational and advisory role, supporting initiatives, offering wisdom and guidance, and encouraging the continued pursuit of Auroville's founding ideals.
Fellows are individuals who have a deep connection with the Auroville community and have made significant contributions to the world in fields related to Auroville's ideals. Currently, those who are Aurovilians or permanently reside in Auroville cannot become Global Fellows, though this policy may change in the future.
New candidates are discussed and decided by the coordinating team. Aurovilians and Fellows can propose potential Global Fellows by contacting the coordination team at fellowship-coordination@auroville.community.
This decision was made to create a space where Global Fellows can interact without being overwhelmed by Auroville's daily affairs. As the Fellowship's role is to offer advice from an external perspective, it was determined that beginning with a more focused discussion forum would be beneficial. As the initiative evolves, this policy may be reconsidered.
The Auroville Global Fellowship complements existing entities such as the International Advisory Council of the Auroville Foundation and the Auroville International Board and Centers. While these organizations have formal roles within or closely connected to Auroville's governance structure, the Fellowship serves as an independent global network focused on providing inspiration, perspectives and suggestions.
Past members of the International Advisory Council and past or present members of Auroville International can become Global Fellows if they meet the basic criteria.
The Fellowship emerged from discussions among Aurovilians about how to network friends and supporters to provide more help and ideas to the Auroville community. While the initiative started in Auroville, the Fellowship functions as an independent entity. This independent structure allows the Fellowship to provide external perspectives while maintaining a close connection to Auroville's mission and values. The Auroville Global Fellowship has already made significant contributions through its advisory role. In January 2025, the Fellowship published its first major report titled Auroville in Crisis & The Way Forward, which provides a comprehensive analysis of governance challenges faced by Auroville and offers constructive recommendations for resolving them. This report demonstrates the Fellowship's commitment to supporting Auroville's mission while upholding its founding principles.
Additionally, the Fellowship launched several initiatives, such as the Auroville Witness newsletter, or a series of online conferences—the first of which featured Ashish Kothari, Global Fellow, on the theme of eco-swaraj.
