(English/French) How Major Arun Ambathy learned of harmony within diversity from Auroville’s forests and foresters, and then developed a project guiding people through experiences. This was done with people with disabilities, who already have a sense of making a conscious choice to live.

At Révélation, I met Patrick and Nathalie. Immediately, a very deep connection formed between Patrick and me — an immediate bond, much like that between a master and his disciple. It was such a profound connection that I decided this was where I wanted to live and learn. I stayed there for three months, living in a capsule. I was Patrick’s student.
The transfer of knowledge that took place between us was phenomenal — though entirely one-sided, as I taught him nothing in return. Yet, it was a relationship akin to that of father and son, or guru and disciple. I learned an immense amount, and I came to realize that what I was learning from Patrick was this: the forest — and nature as a whole — serves as a model for the harmonization of existence; a harmonization of pluralities, of diversity, and of numbers. It is a stable model.
As I walked through nature, I would say to myself: “Yes! I have found the answer!” This is precisely what must be replicated within human existence: the way in which nature harmonizes diversity — whether in terms of different species or the specific quantities within each species. Nature constantly regenerates itself; it is in a state of perpetual evolution and expansion. And it achieves all of this harmoniously.
Of course, there is an element of destruction inherent in nature as well, but there always exists an underlying equilibrium — an equilibrium that invariably tends toward a harmonious existence, toward expansion and evolution. Patrick refers to this concept as “holistic ecology.” Holistic ecology is an idea — a conceptual framework — that, in my view, possesses broad, cross-disciplinary applications. Whether in economics, sociology, politics, or philosophy, this concept offers phenomenal applications across every field of knowledge.
I felt a deep resonance with this perspective, and gradually, Patrick introduced me to those who had originally pioneered this idea — namely, the French philosophers, beginning with Rousseau. However, this vision was subsequently developed further by Clements in the early 20th century, and later by Eugene Odum. They speak of ecology as an all-encompassing system.
I reached out to the other foresters in Auroville, and they welcomed me because I understood their ideas. They showed me around various sites and exposed me to a tremendous wealth of knowledge. I realized that this was not merely intellectual knowledge — insights they had arrived at through reflection alone. This knowledge had been put into practice, tested, and brought into tangible form. And it had been conclusively demonstrated to be useful, productive, effective, and dynamic.
This knowledge—this practical application — must be codified; it must be gathered and preserved. It must spread throughout the world. And this applies not only to forests; it offers a solution for all manner of systems — for all kinds of organizations. But first and foremost, of course, for the forest itself. This is precisely what I am striving to develop alongside Patrick: the Révélation educational project.
Claw Global
I set out once again. I was still searching for more answers. In 2019, I met Major Vivek Jacob. He was full of ideas on how to improve the human condition. I worked with him at an organization called Claw Global. 1
Throughout 2019 and 2020, I worked intensively to help build the organization. We launched a host of social initiatives. We were brimming with energy and ideas. We initiated numerous projects that had a significant social impact.
There was all the research I had conducted throughout my life, the knowledge I had gathered at Auroville, and then there was Major Vivek Jacob’s own lived experience. He had taken part in intense combat and had undergone several near-death experiences — each of which had brought him specific spiritual insights and realizations. However, the most recent of these had left a particularly vivid and powerful impression on him. Consequently, he decided to leave the army and dedicate himself to something constructive — something involving creation rather than destruction. Killing no longer held any meaning for him. Thus, we found ourselves walking along similar paths.
We came up with the idea that we needed to guide people through experiences that would strip away their insecurities and unlock their full potential. These activities existed at the intersection of recreation, rehabilitation, and skills development. The challenge was to engage people in activities that served a rehabilitative purpose — teaching them something new, something they could use to earn a livelihood — while remaining enjoyable. Participation had to be a pleasurable experience; that is how you attract people.
Our exposure to combat — our proximity to death — had given us certain insights. Such experiences foster a unique state of mind. This mindset transcends death; and when you no longer fear death, everything distills down to the central truth within you. You are no longer attached to the myriad trivialities of existence.
We sought to disseminate this mindset more widely because it holds the potential to generate the most significant positive impact. In the Special Forces, this mindset—this profound psychological realization — is harnessed for the purpose of destruction, to unleash destructive forces; yet our vision was that, in the civilian sphere, this same spirit could be employed toward a different end: creation. To use this mindset to create, not to destroy.
It was with this in mind that we developed training programs for young people with disabilities. First, we recognized that this was the area where we could make the greatest impact, as their lives are often fraught with extreme hardship. Furthermore, we observed that imparting this mindset to them came quite naturally, for these individuals with disabilities have, at some point, brushed against death.
If, for instance, someone has survived a traffic accident — or if they once contemplated suicide — they have stared death in the face; consequently, much of the superfluous clutter has been stripped from their lives, allowing them to perceive life with greater authenticity. Thus, they are spiritually kindred spirits.
We often pity them because we fail to grasp the true nature of their psychological state; yet, following certain incidents, Major Jacob realized that — on a spiritual level — they share the very same mentality as a Special Forces soldier: namely, the determination to live regardless of the circumstances — however arduous they may be — by making the conscious choice to live.
Everything seems stacked against them, yet they choose to live — to survive, to find stability, and to move forward — within a context of omnipresent hostility. They are indifferent to the distinction between living and dying; they have transcended that duality. Internally, they live in a state of happiness. Of course, not in every single case — but for the most part.
During our training sessions, we realized that they possessed this very spirit. We worked on finding solutions to improve their physical condition; this is how the “Blue Freedom” initiative came to be launched. We trained people with disabilities all across India, completely free of charge. We wanted a great many people — not just those with disabilities, but also young people and ordinary citizens — to come and share in this experience.
The idea was to instill in them the mindset acquired by Special Forces operatives: the determination to succeed even when operating within a hostile environment. We sought to instill a spirit of creativity — one in which they could experience exponential growth, constant evolution, and exceptional efficiency. These are the defining characteristics of the Special Forces mindset.
We had no funding; we survived solely thanks to the kindness of others. People donated equipment, vehicles, and various other resources. We traveled throughout India, providing therapeutic scuba diving training to people with disabilities.
CLAW Global in Auroville
One day, I spoke with Major Jacob. I told him about Auroville and what I had learned there. And he said: “But in the long run, that is precisely the vision of human unity that we hold; all our activities aim to channel creativity and harmonize human existence.” So, he was entirely on the same wavelength. He read some texts about Auroville and realized that its core philosophy was both very powerful and highly relevant.
Consequently, we moved from Delhi to Auroville in November 2020. We met with Aurovilians and explained our ideas. Someone suggested we visit the Quiet Healing Center down by the beach; we were told that this location would be perfectly suited to our activities. Guido welcomed us with open arms and provided us with a great deal of assistance. We launched our training programs there.
The Quiet Center marked our first formal association with Auroville — the first true synergy between CLAW Global and Auroville. We wanted to institutionalize this entire endeavor. Indeed, we had to struggle to secure funding, and we had to struggle to obtain the necessary permits. We faced an uphill battle at every level because our concept was not easily understood.
To address this, we came up with the idea of staging a somewhat spectacular event that would make a real impact — setting three world records that would serve as a demonstration of the highest human capabilities: mastery of the land, the air, and the water.
In the Special Forces, we utilize the land, air, and sea environments to infiltrate enemy territory, destroy targets, or carry out lethal operations. However, we had discovered that this very mastery of the elements possessed not only therapeutic applications but also phenomenal potential for liberating the human spirit. Thus, we conceived these three world record attempts, bringing together a team of Special Forces veterans from across the globe alongside a group of individuals with disabilities — also hailing from all corners of the world.
We had come to realize that there comes a point when soldiers no longer desire combat, but instead yearn to transition toward something creative. And that this was an experience shared by soldiers all over the world.
We drafted heaps of documents outlining our plans and wrote numerous project proposals — efforts that were duly noted by the Indian government. They granted us permission for the first world record attempt, which involved taking people with disabilities to the Siachen Glacier. However, as this is a sensitive military zone, the Army did not want foreigners entering the area; consequently, we took an Indian team there instead.
The other two record attempts, however, will be undertaken with global teams. We are currently preparing for the second world record attempt: a skydiving world record. In the interim, COVID-19 had struck, and we had suspended our scuba diving courses. At that time, Patrick contacted me to let me know he was leaving for two years and needed assistance; I accepted immediately.
I returned to Révélation in January of this year, where I rediscovered my former passion for this adventure. Once again, I felt a strong pull toward this place. I asked my business partner to take on a greater share of the responsibilities at Claw Global for a while, as I wanted to devote all my energy to Révélation. That is precisely what I have been doing since January. Today, however, I am striving to strike a balance between these two endeavors.
The Various Forests of Auroville
I want to capture all the knowledge that has been discovered here. I stay in touch with Patrick through regular Zoom meetings; I get him talking and I take down everything he tells me. I have also met other experts — Rishi, Rick, and others.
There are 44 forests in Auroville, and while they are all founded on different concepts, broadly speaking, there are two ways of viewing ecological restoration — two distinct schools of thought. One of these approaches is based on the TDEF [Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest] model and holds its own specific relevance. Examples include the Botanical Garden, Sadhana Forest, and Pitchandikulam.
The other approach is reforestation that utilizes the science of succession — a form of holistic ecology — in which additional parameters are introduced and further exploration is undertaken, based on the belief that the TDEF is not the ultimate endpoint.
It is possible for a forest to evolve beyond the TDEF stage; in fact, there is no limit. It can go far beyond that — reaching a density comparable to that of the Amazon — and we can see signs of this when walking through Révélation: in the biomass, biodiversity, canopy structure, soil composition, and species density. This goes far beyond what is found in forests based solely on the TDEF model.
I am not criticizing the concept of recreating a tropical dry forest; that approach holds a specific relevance within the history of Auroville.
In my view, the evolution of the forests here has passed through three distinct phases. During the first phase, the goal was simply to find trees that would provide shade — whether neem trees or work-trees (Acacia auriculiformis) didn’t matter — as the priority was simply to establish a canopy.
Then came the botanical studies and the scientific classification of species. Researchers visited sacred groves, compared the local environment with similar regions elsewhere, and reached a conclusion: we must plant TDEF species, as they constitute the original ecosystem.
Then came another generation of foresters who asked: why limit ourselves to the TDEF? This represents the school of thought embodied by Révélation. It incorporates the concept of the TDEF but goes a step further.
This body of knowledge must be gathered and disseminated throughout India. That is precisely what I am currently striving to do. I travel from time to time, managing the day-to-day operations of Révélation, while also working to organize workshops and courses in coordination with Patrick.
From the very inception of Auroville, this site was intended to be a park. However, it was envisioned as a “wild” park — one that would embody the energy of Mahakali: a force of destruction that harmonizes diversity and compels you to let go. Indeed, that was my own experience here; I surrendered to the irresistible power of this vision.
Thus, it is a park — yet not an ordinary urban park. It is wild and dense. It must also house a research center to facilitate the dissemination of this knowledge. That is the long-term plan. The educational center is of paramount importance, for this place speaks to you directly, even if you possess absolutely no background in ecology. The work that has been accomplished here is truly phenomenal. A serious researcher would require two full years to master everything there is to learn within these grounds.
Auroville Review – Given the current situation, isn’t there a risk that all of this could be destroyed?
Major Arun – Ideas cannot be destroyed. The physical manifestation may be destroyed, but not the ideas; they will resurface elsewhere. The idea will survive. It possesses the merit of its own truth.
Auroville will be protected by its own truth.

On débordait d’énergie, d’idées.
